T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., is the principal author of The China Study. As the first person in his family to attend college, he happily transferred to Cornell University when scholarship money offered to pay his tuition. With personal background of raised on a dairy farm, it was only natural that his field of study focused on finding better ways “…to make cows and sheep grow faster.” (Campbell & Campbell, 2006, pg. 4)
Along the way, his work took him to the Philippines where his research found that the wealthiest families had children most likely to get liver cancer – from the highest protein diets. When Dr. Campbell noticed a research project from India that countered every scientific principle he had been taught, he grew curious. The Indian project worked with two groups of rates, both groups given the same amount of cancer-causing chemical. One group was fed a diet of 20% protein (approximate to the SAD – Standard American Diet) and another was fed of 5% protein. The surprising result was every animal in the 20% protein group “…had evidence of liver cancer,” (Campbell & Campbell, 2006, pg. 5) and not one animal in the other group had any evidence of cancer.
That was the first of many studies that caught my attention.
Dr. Campbell found much resistance in his industry when he shared the results of these studies. So he began at the very beginning to study the effect of nutrition, specifically protein, on cancer with 27 years of funded research by National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society, and the American Institute for Cancer Research. His studies were reviewed prior to being published in prestigious scientific journals.
One of the most profound statements in Campbell and Campbell’s 2006 book is “…dietary protein proved to be so powerful in its effect that we could turn on and turn off cancer growth simply by changing the level consumed.” (pg. 6)
