Week Three Recommendation


Let’s review where we are. So far, we have not eliminated anything from the Standard American Diet (SAD). Your grocery list includes extra items: 7 lemons, 7 fruit servings. So far, so good. Why are we progressing so slowly? Check out the video below to find out what happens when a SADder goes full-tilt vegan:

So, maintaining our pace of keeping your existing diet and adding more items, select one item from the list below to have as a snack every day. You can select one item to eat every day for seven days, or seven different items to be eaten one each day – eating one different snack a day, or mix and match.

Suggested snacks:

* popcorn (no butter)

* any larabar (TARGET has good prices on boxes of the bars)

* 1/2 green or red pepper cut into strips

* any piece of fruit

* celery with peanut butter

* blue corn chips with flax seed

* 1/2 cup raw nuts

* guacamole (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/guacamole-recipe/index.html )

* hummus (recipe below – will keep for one week)

* banana pops (Thanks, Casey! – recipe below – great snack fast food)



1/4 C        Water

3 Tbsp      Tahini

3 Tbsp      Lemon juice

1 Tbsp      Olive oil

16 oz        can of Great Northern beans, drained & rinsed

2 cloves  crushed garlic

4                sprigs of Parsley or Cilantro

1/4 tsp    salt

to taste   hot-pepper sauce

Blend all ingredients in blender on medium speed. You may have to stop and scrap the sides from time to time to blend all ingredients. Hummus can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to one week. Use as dip for vegetables, or as sandwich spread instead of mayonnaise or eat directly. Yum!

Casey’s Banana Pops

2      overripe, soft bananas

1 C   oatmeal (not instant)

anything else to add: 1/4 C coconut, 1/4 C raisins, 1/4 C crushed nuts, 1/4 C chocolate chips

Mash everything well. Spoon onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in preheated 350 degree F oven for 15 minutes. After they cool, you can store them in the refrigerator to snack on later – great fast food snack option!
